Book consultationFreeze away skin blemishes in seconds
Cryopen is a precise form of cryotherapy that freezes unwanted, harmless skin lesions with a fine jet of nitrous oxide. Working at around −89°C, it targets the lesion itself and leaves the healthy skin around it alone.
There are no needles and no anaesthetic, each lesion takes just seconds, and most people carry straight on with their day afterwards.

What Cryopen can treat
Cryopen is suitable for a wide range of common, harmless skin lesions, including moles once they’ve been checked by a dermatologist. Shannon checks every lesion at your consultation to make sure it’s right for treatment.

Skin tags
Soft, harmless growths that tend to appear where skin rubs, such as the neck, underarms and chest.

Milia
Tiny, hard white bumps that sit just under the surface of the skin, often on the cheeks and nose.

Campbell de Morgan spots
Bright red, raised spots, also called cherry angiomas, that become more common as we get older.

Flat brown patches, known as solar lentigines, caused by years of sun exposure on the face, hands and chest.
Seborrhoeic keratoses
Raised, waxy brown growths with a “stuck on” look. Harmless, but they can catch on clothing and jewellery.
Warts and verrucas
Common viral warts on the hands and verrucas on the feet. Stubborn ones may need more than one session.

Moles
Raised or unwanted moles can be removed with Cryopen once they’ve been checked. Every mole is photographed and reviewed by a dermatologist through MapMyMole first, so only moles confirmed as benign are treated.
Mole removal in CambridgeHow Cryopen works
Cryopen delivers a fine, high-pressure jet of nitrous oxide through a pen-sized applicator. The cells in the lesion freeze and break down, and over the following days your body naturally clears the treated tissue as fresh skin forms underneath.
Because the jet is so precise, Shannon can treat small lesions accurately while the skin around them is left untouched.
Consultation and skin check
Shannon looks at each lesion, confirms it’s suitable for Cryopen and goes through your medical history, so you know exactly what to expect.
Your Cryopen treatment
Each lesion is frozen for a few seconds at a time. You’ll feel a brief, sharp cold sting, a bit like a pinprick, and no anaesthetic is needed.
Healing at home
The area turns white, then pink as it thaws. A small blister or scab may form over the next few days and usually falls away on its own within one to two weeks.
Aftercare and suitability
Cryopen needs very little aftercare, but a few simple steps help your skin heal well.
Looking after your skin
Keep the area clean and dry for the first few days.
Let any blister or scab heal on its own, and try not to pick at it.
Avoid swimming, saunas and long soaks for 48 hours.
Keep make-up off the treated area until it has healed.
Protect the area with SPF whenever you’re outdoors.
Get in touch with Shannon if you notice any signs of infection.
Is Cryopen right for you?
Cryopen isn’t right for everyone. Shannon will go through your medical history first, and may suggest a different treatment if you:
have Raynaud’s, cold urticaria or cryoglobulinaemia
have used isotretinoin (Roaccutane) in the last 6 to 12 months
are pregnant or breastfeeding
have a lesion close to the eyes
have a mole that hasn’t been checked by a dermatologist
On deeper skin tones the treated area is more likely to heal lighter, so Shannon will talk this through with you before treatment.
Your Cryopen questions answered
Does Cryopen hurt?
Most people find it very manageable. You’ll feel a sharp, cold sting, a bit like a pinprick, for the few seconds each lesion is being frozen. No needles or anaesthetic are needed.
How many treatments will I need?
Many lesions clear after a single treatment. Larger or more stubborn lesions, such as some warts, may need a second session. Shannon will let you know what to expect at your consultation.
How long does it take to heal?
A small blister or scab usually forms within a few days and falls away on its own within one to two weeks. Most areas are fully healed within two to six weeks, depending on the size of the lesion.
Will Cryopen leave a scar?
Scarring is rare. The treated skin can look a little pink, lighter or darker for a while afterwards, and this usually settles over a few months. On deeper skin tones, lighter patches can occasionally be permanent.
Can Cryopen remove moles?
Yes, once it’s been checked. Every mole is photographed and reviewed by a dermatologist through MapMyMole before treatment, so only moles confirmed as benign are removed. Find out more about mole removal at Shannon Dry Aesthetics.
Can I go back to normal straight away?
Yes. There’s no downtime, so you can carry on with your day as normal. Just keep the area clean and dry, and let any scab heal on its own.
