Microneedling near Madingley with SkinPen Precision, carried out by Shannon at her clinic in Upper Cambourne.
Microneedling uses fine needles to make controlled micro-injuries in the skin, at a depth chosen for the area being treated. The point is the repair: over the following weeks your skin lays down new collagen and elastin in response, and it is that repair which leaves skin firmer and smoother.
What microneedling is good for
- Acne scarring, especially rolling and boxcar scars left after acne has settled
- Texture and open pores, where skin looks rough or uneven
- Fine lines and early collagen loss, as part of a maintenance routine
- Uneven skin tone and general skin rejuvenation
It is not the right choice for active breakouts or for problems sitting on the surface of the skin.
The device
Treatments use SkinPen Precision, the first microneedling device to be granted FDA clearance. Each cartridge holds fourteen surgical stainless steel needles, is sterile and single use, and is opened in front of you.
Your appointment
Your first visit is a consultation and, in most cases, your first treatment. Shannon assesses your skin, goes through your history and current products, and checks for anything that means treatment should wait. If it goes ahead, numbing cream is applied and left for around half an hour. The treatment itself takes about half an hour, with the depth adjusted across the face, and a hydrogel layer is applied afterwards. You leave with written aftercare and a record of the depths used.
When treatment is postponed
Microneedling will wait if you have active acne or a breakout in the treatment area, an active cold sore, recent isotretinoin use or a history of keloid scarring, or if you are pregnant.
Results
Very little appears to happen for the first couple of weeks, because the change comes from the collagen your skin builds afterwards. That is why treatments are spaced around a month apart and results build gradually over a course.
